The One That Didn’t Suck
31March 6, 2013 by Xenogirl
For those of you following my blog, you may remember the elation with which I typed the words “The End” to my 2012 NaNoWriMo novel. Writing over 50,000 words in less than thirty days felt like the wordsmithing equivalent of summiting an oxygen-deprived mountain peak. Thus I had decided to take a well-deserved break and begin revisions after a couple of weeks. Being the inexperienced, moody, and insecure writer that I am, the weeks that followed were not so exuberant. Along with the holiday season and the oppressive darkness of a Wisconsin winter came a creeping, gnawing fear that…

NaNoWriMo Last Words…
28December 11, 2012 by Xenogirl
On Monday, I finally decided to claw my way out of my post-NaNoWriMo stupor and return to my beloved laptop. It’s been ten whole days since I wrote anything, although it has taken that long to catch up with the realities of life. Just returning my home to some semblance of cleanliness and order has eaten up much of my time. Plus, my brain is still processing this month-long experiment in writing a “practice novel.” As the days raced by, I learned a few hard knock lessons which of course I will share with you, my dearest readers, and I won’t even go into the ridiculous details of the actual head concussion I suffered on about day six…

A Hot Literary Mess
12November 26, 2012 by Xenogirl
I am feeling guilty for neglecting my blog during this month of novel-writing madness, but dear readers, I hope you can patiently bear with me. The end of NaNoWriMo is in sight! It’s already Day 26, and I am afraid to leave my house for fear some disaster will strike…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Renewal
7November 14, 2012 by Xenogirl
This week’s photo theme is “Renewal,” which reminded of a picture I took in Pakistan while working as a grant writer. This little girl and her family had been made homeless by the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake (7.6 magnitude), which killed an estimated 75,000 people and destroyed her village. Most families were still living in tents and emergency shelters throughout the winter and into…

NaNoWriMo Inspiration… Day Ten
7November 10, 2012 by Xenogirl

“The easiest way to separate yourself from the unformed blobby mass of “aspiring” writers is to a) actually write and b) actually finish. That’s how easy it is to clamber up the ladder to the second echelon. Write. And finish what you write. That’s how you…

NaNoWriMo Inspiration… Day Six
7November 6, 2012 by Xenogirl

“A writer never finds the time to write. A writer makes it. If you don’t have the drive, the discipline, and the desire…”

Surviving 30 Days of NaNoWriMo
32October 29, 2012 by Xenogirl

Dear readers, last week I pledged to you all that I am going to tackle National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, as the cool kids call it. One of my favorite bloggers over at Out Where the Buses Don’t Run recently wrote about his NaNoWriMo Weapons of Mass Destruction. His post got me thinking… 50,000 words in only 30 days is indeed unreasonable. In fact, it is quite likely that this endeavor will result in an epic, personal nervous breakdown somewhere around day ten or eleven. How am I, a naïve NaNoWriMo newbie, going to survive the month of November? Thus it is in the spirit of sanity that I present to you my personal NaNoWriMo Survival Kit…
